According to reports, the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has permanently discontinued its rice distribution program in Lagos.
According to Naija News, the Customs Service revealed last week that it would be giving out food products that had been seized to Nigerian citizens.
The goal of the action was to lessen Nigerians’ annoyance as they persisted in staging protests to voice their complaints about the nation’s failing economy.
However, the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) announced that the process had been paused, thus it appears that the program, which got underway on Friday, was short-lived.
Dozens of individuals were said to have lurked around the massive building on Saturday, hoping that the rice distribution program that had begun the day before would continue, while officers brandishing rifles held prominent positions both inside and outside.
The news outlet received confirmation of the development from an NCS officer, who explained that the exercise had been put on hold indefinitely.
However, the Customs official did not provide an explanation for the initiative’s suspension.”I have no idea why it was put on hold. However, it is only for the time being,” he stated. The suspension was reportedly brought about by claims that a stampede that killed some Lagosians occurred on Friday during the attempt to enter the location of the rice distribution program.
