Ethiopia welcomed the start of the 2017 New Year, with a focus on Afrobeat sensation Davido. Ethiopia commonly celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ seven or eight years later than the Gregorian, or “Western,” calendar. As a result, September 11 or September 12 in leap years are the dates for celebrating New Year, or Enkutatash, every year.
One of the highlights of the colourful celebrations was Davido’s performance, which raised the anticipation of the holiday with his upbeat set and enthusiastic audience.
Davido posted a statement on the occasion, saying, “Ethiopia last night was amazing!!” In response to the viral footage, Nigerians joked wryly that it looked like the singer had travelled back in time to perform.
