“No More Second Term?” – Peter Obi Shocks Nigerians with Five-Year Presidential Tenure Proposal

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has sparked fresh political conversations after suggesting that Nigeria should adopt a single five-year tenure for presidents instead of the current four years with the possibility of re-election.

Omo, this is going to be hot — because if this ever becomes reality, it will totally change the game for how politics works in Nigeria.

Obi’s Argument for Change

Speaking on Friday during a courtesy visit to Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed at the Government House, Obi said removing the option of a second term would allow the president to focus solely on delivering campaign promises without being distracted by re-election plans.

In his words:

“If I have the opportunity, we should stop having a second tenure for president. It should be five years straight, so that people come in knowing they have a job to do. What people do now is be president for one year and use the rest thinking about their next tenure. We must stop it — let’s face the real job, do your own and go.”

Call for Stronger Political Parties

Obi, who is also seen as a potential 2027 presidential candidate, stressed that political parties should have stronger structures that are independent of elected officials.

“I want the party to be bigger than the president and governors so that we can have orderliness,” he added.

Governor Bala Mohammed’s Response

In a surprising twist, Governor Mohammed invited Obi to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing it as his “political home.”

“We want you to come back to the PDP… there are plans, desires, and strategies,” he said.

He also urged opposition parties to drop ego and personal interests to work together for the good of Nigerians.

Netizens React to Obi’s Suggestion

As expected, the internet wasted no time in reacting. Comments ranged from praise to mockery, with many questioning Obi’s consistency.

  • Prince Muhammed Tadese Gcfr: “This is the person that told you two years is enough to solve Nigeria’s problem.”
  • Moses Gbenga: “From 4 years to 5 years… next it will be 6 years. Inconsistency at its peak.”
  • Layi Akanbi: “Good idea — let’s start it with Tinubu’s second term.”
  • Kehinde Abiodun Oke: “Obi is a confused man… his followers should open their eyes.”
  • Olufemi Mustapha: “He should push for it if he ever becomes president.”

Omo, whether you agree or not, one thing is sure — this proposal has Nigerians talking, and the political drama just got more interesting.
