The Nigerian music superstar Divine Ikubor aka Rema, recently shared his thoughts on the relationship of Nigerian parents toward their children, which he says tends to evolve when and if the children start contributing financially to the house.

Rema was speaking with content creator Enzo during Enzo’s encouragement to get a tattoo similar to his. He mentioned that parents tend to loosen their grip on rules and criticisms once their child starts earning a considerable amount of income.

Enzo expressed reluctance because, in his view, his mother would not approve of such expressions. In fact, he recalled how she had given him the silent treatment for days over something as simple as braiding his hair.

Giving his friend some advice about his situation, Rema spoke about how he should hustle hard because, once he becomes financially independent, things would be different at home: “Don’t worry. You just need to hustle a little bit more. Wait till you cash out big. Nigerian parents don’t advise breadwinners.” He meant that money usually determines the extent to which parents feel entitled to an opinion regarding their kiddies’ decisions.

The artist based his assertions on personal experiences. Having lost his father in childhood, he had taken on that load quite early on. He actually said he made his first one million naira only at the age of 17 and chose to give every bit of it to his mother instead. This, he noted, was a moment of transition within his family relationship and also afforded him some level of freedom in deconstructing what was expected of him.
