Real Madrid have reportedly made a huge call regarding the future of two of their most experienced defenders — David Alaba and Antonio Rüdiger.
According to Diario AS, Los Blancos have no plans to renew the expiring contracts of the veteran duo, with both players entering the final year of their current deals.
For Alaba, the news doesn’t come as much of a surprise. The Austrian has battled form and fitness issues for much of his time in Spain, with injuries seriously hampering his consistency.
Omo, but the real shocker dey here! The decision not to extend Antonio Rüdiger’s stay is what has raised eyebrows across Europe.
The German centre-back, formerly of Chelsea, was widely regarded as the leader of Madrid’s backline before injuries struck. Last season, his campaign was cut short after he was forced to undergo surgery, and though he struggled for rhythm, his leadership and aggression at the back were never in doubt.
Omo this one pain o, because many fans expected Madrid to keep Rüdiger for at least a few more years. But the club’s long-term vision seems clear — lowering the squad’s average age and building around a younger defensive core.
As AS confirmed:
“Madrid aren’t planning to renew Rüdiger and Alaba, who have one year left on their contracts.”
This means that by summer 2026, both players are set to leave the Santiago Bernabéu unless a sudden U-turn takes place.
For now, the decision signals another big transition period for Real Madrid. With young defenders like Éder Militão, Ferland Mendy, and possibly new signings expected to step up, the club is preparing for the future without two of its most senior figures at the back.
