It was a day to remember for Maghnes Akliouche (23), who received his first call-up to the French national team on Thursday. Speaking to reporters in a press conference attended by Get French Football News, the AS Monaco forward admitted he was taken aback by the news.

“Honestly, I’m very proud. It is a great surprise for me,” Akliouche said.

The attacking midfielder has already represented France at youth level and featured for Les Bleus during the 2024 Paris Olympics, but this marks his first senior call-up.

Choosing France Over Algeria

Akliouche was eligible to play for Algeria, the birthplace of his parents, and speculation had long surrounded which nation he would ultimately represent. The 23-year-old, however, made it clear that his decision was a natural progression.

“I have deep respect for Algeria,” he explained. “But I have always been in the France national team at youth level, as well as at the Olympics. It was a logical continuation to represent France. It was a logical conclusion.”

Omo, no turning back now — Akliouche is Les Bleus all the way.

Talent and Patience

The Monaco star also reflected on the level of competition within the French setup. “There is a lot of talent in the national team, in this country. You have to be patient, and, luckily for me, the day came,” he said.

Akliouche revealed he learned of his call-up just like any other fan — by watching the squad announcement on TV. Shortly after, he received a congratulatory phone call from none other than Thierry Henry, one of his former coaches.

What Next for Akliouche?

The call-up is a major step in Akliouche’s career and a huge boost for Monaco, who have watched his steady rise in Ligue 1. With France packed with attacking options, the 23-year-old knows he will have to work hard to cement his place, but his debut could mark the beginning of an exciting international journey.

For now, Akliouche is simply soaking in the moment — a proud day for him, Monaco, and French football.
