During a press session at the White House on Tuesday, Trump was asked about the growing tension between him and the South African-born billionaire. His response?

What Caused the Rift?

Reports say the fallout began after Musk criticised Trump’s flagship legislative proposal, dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill”, especially over the cutback on electric vehicle (EV) support.

Trump, clearly unhappy, even mentioned that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) might start reviewing Musk’s access to government subsidies.

“We might have to put DOGE on Elon… DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon,” he said — part joke, part warning.

Taking it even further, Trump fired shots on Truth Social, saying:

“Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa.”

He also suggested that Elon’s dominance in the tech space — including Tesla and SpaceX — heavily depended on government support.

Musk, who once had a solid relationship with Trump (and even served as the head of DOGE until May), isn’t taking the drama lightly. Sources claim he’s considering launching a new political movement — called the “America Party” — if Trump’s spending bill passes.

He also accused Trump and the Republican Party of “turning their backs on clean energy and EV innovation.”
