Nasarawa State is in the news again, and omo, this gist no be small! According to reports, no fewer than 16 inmates have escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi in the early hours of Tuesday, August 12, 2025.

The spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Umar Abubakar, confirmed the development in a statement, revealing that the dramatic escape happened after a major breach of the facility’s security.

Inmates Overpower Officers – Some Recaptured

The official statement disclosed that the inmates overpowered personnel on duty, creating chaos that allowed them to break free.

“Some inmates breached the security of the facility and attacked personnel on duty… enabling 16 inmates to escape custody,” the statement read.

Omo, this is where it gets hotter — during the chaos, five officers were injured, with two in serious condition and currently receiving urgent medical care in a government hospital. Seven of the fleeing inmates have already been recaptured, but nine are still on the run.

CG Orders Full Investigation

The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, wasted no time in visiting the facility. He has ordered a comprehensive investigation into how the escape happened and what lapses allowed it.

Jailbreaks in Nigeria – A Growing Concern

This isn’t the first time Nigeria is facing such a breakout. Just last year, nearly 120 inmates escaped from Suleja prison after torrential rains brought down buildings and a perimeter wall. In July 2022, over 600 prisoners — including suspected IS and Boko Haram members — broke out of Kuje prison in Abuja.

Again in April 2021, about 1,800 inmates fled after gunmen attacked a prison in Imo State, and later that year, over 800 escaped from Oyo prison.

Omo, with this kind of track record, one has to ask — when will Nigeria finally put an end to these jailbreak dramas?
