Award-winning Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has finally opened up on what she believes truly drives Peter Obi’s desire to lead Nigeria — and according to her, it’s not desperation or hunger for power.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Amazing Africans, Chimamanda made it clear that Obi’s ambition is built on love for the country and not for ego, recognition, or personal gain.

“He Doesn’t Need to Be President”

In her words:

“He doesn’t need to be president. He wants to be because he cares about Nigeria. And that’s a very important distinction.”

Omo, pause there — this is where you know she’s not just talking about any politician. Chimamanda went further to draw a line between those who are desperate for political office just to feed their egos and those who truly have the nation’s interest at heart.

Why She Supports Obi

According to reports, Chimamanda’s support for Obi is rooted in his selfless leadership style and consistent character. She stressed that the Peter Obi she knew 15 years ago is the same man today — still genuine, consistent, and curious.

She added that these qualities are rare and essential in any leader who hopes to transform a nation.

Leadership as Service, Not Power

Chimamanda also praised Obi’s humility, stating that he views leadership as service, not as an opportunity to dominate people.

“Peter Obi is not someone who expects gratitude for doing his job. He sees leadership as responsibility, not a privilege,” she said.

Omo, in today’s political climate, that’s a statement that will definitely make tongues wag.

When Asked About the Future…

On whether Obi might not secure a presidential ticket in the future, Chimamanda kept it calm and diplomatic. She allegedly said she didn’t want to speculate because no one knows what will happen yet.

And just like that, this gist has left many Nigerians talking — some nodding in agreement, others ready to debate.
