Putin made this bold statement during a meeting in Moscow with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi on Monday, barely two days after former U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly ordered missile strikes on three major Iranian nuclear sites.

Russia Claims Strikes Have “No Basis”

In a televised statement, Putin said:

“The unprovoked aggression against Iran has no basis and no justification… we are making efforts to assist the Iranian people.”

He expressed optimism over Iran’s visit to Moscow, stating the meeting was necessary to find a way out of the current crisis.

Iran Thanks Russia, Labels Strikes as Unlawful

In response, Araqchi defended Iran’s stance, describing the country’s retaliatory moves as legitimate self-defence. He appreciated Russia’s support, and even conveyed greetings from Iran’s Supreme Leader and President.

He went on to say:

“Russia is today on the right side of history and international law.”

But What Will Russia Really Do?

Although Putin pledged diplomatic backing, it’s still unclear what concrete actions Russia is ready to take. The strategic agreement signed by both nations in January reportedly doesn’t include a military support clause.

According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov,

“It all depends on what Iran needs.”

He emphasized that Russia’s mediation and diplomatic efforts are already a form of support.

Kremlin Blames U.S. for Escalating Conflict

Peskov didn’t hold back. He warned that the conflict is now involving more players, calling it a “new spiral of escalation.”

He also raised fresh concerns about possible radiation risks at Iran’s nuclear facilities, following the U.S. bombings.

Interestingly, Peskov revealed that Trump did not give Putin any detailed briefing about the planned attacks, despite recent communications between the two leaders.
