The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has reportedly shut down the popular but controversial streaming site, MovieBox.ng, over allegations of piracy — and trust Nigerians online, reactions don dey fly already!

In a statement released Thursday from Abuja, Mrs. Ijeoma Egbunike, the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, confirmed that MovieBox.ng was officially suspended on July 20, 2025. This move was executed in partnership with the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) as part of a wider war against digital piracy.

The STOP Campaign: A Serious Warning Shot

According to NCC’s Director-General, Dr. John Asein, the action is part of the agency’s ongoing “Stand Together Against Online Piracy (STOP)” campaign, which aims to clean up Nigeria’s digital space from platforms illegally streaming movies, music, and even live sports.

Omo, e be like say this piracy matter don reach breaking point, and NCC no dey play anymore 😤

Dr. Asein didn’t hold back either. He revealed that MovieBox.ng was using multiple mirror domains and had ties to previously flagged piracy operations — making it a tough target to pin down. But the joint effort with NiRA finally clipped its wings.

NiRA’s Quick Move Praised

NiRA received praise from the Commission for its swift cooperation in pulling the plug on the domain. Dr. Asein also used the opportunity to call on ISPs, registrars, and tech intermediaries to step up and act swiftly on future takedown requests, as provided in Nigeria’s Copyright Act, 2022.

Omo! From the tone of that warning, more sites fit soon collect if dem no shut down sharp sharp ⚠️

Mirror Sites Also Under Watch

But the story no end there. The NCC disclosed that other “mirror” sites and fallback domains tied to MovieBox.ng are already being tracked, and further takedowns are actively in motion.

So if you think say the site go come back quietly with a new name, think again — the heat is on! 🔥

Public Advisory: Stay Woke!

The Commission didn’t just stop at enforcement — they also issued a strong public warning to Nigerians, especially young internet users, to stop visiting illegal streaming platforms.

Apart from being a crime under copyright law, the NCC explained that such platforms often expose users to malware, financial fraud, and identity theft.

Omo, imagine just wan watch film, next thing your bank app don log out permanently 😭

Final Take

This latest crackdown is a serious reminder that digital piracy in Nigeria is being taken very seriously, and the days of freely streaming pirated content without consequences may be numbered.

If you’re still using shady streaming sites, this might be the time to log out and think twice, because the government seems ready for round two. And omo, e go hot!
